C.  New teaching materials and methods

For each of the courses listed above, I have developed syllabi and assignments that evolved with each group of students in order to streamline materials as well as respond to student feedback. I’ve utilized Blackboard for writing assignments, homework and testing.  I’ve created discussion boards to act as sign up boards to schedule weekly presentations.  Under COVID and online learning I adapted my lessons to be fulfilled in the students home.  I developed Webex classes and discussions to aid the students in learning the material.

I utilize theatre technology during my lectures on Lighting and Sound and provide responsive feedback to support my lectures.  I use light to illustrate the effects of lighting angles on the human form, color on skin tones and clothes and how color mixing is subtractive and not additive like paint. During COVID and online learning I adapted my classwork to be accomplished with household materials.  Instead of theatre lighting I had students build models, use flashlights and other household light sources to photograph their concepts for discussion.

For my lectures in THT 100 I bring a rack of costumes to class, encouraging students to wear different historical garments, which I use to illustrate how clothes shape the human form. I also use this to illustrate our prejudices and biases base non clothing.  I also wear several layers of clothing, standing amongst student volunteers to illustrate these prejudices and biases of clothing choices and age.

Combined with physical examples of technical theatre I support my lectures with video and powerpoint examples to achieve a three-pronged attack at delivering and supporting. the information.  During COVID, I added Youtube instructional support videos to be able to satisfy the lighting and sound assignments at home.   I also created the projects myself and showed the students, step by step, how they could build models as well as use family members to learn about the affects of light on a set or subject.

I continue to adapt my lectures to the experiences to the students in my courses. I use personal experience and stories to relate the material.

I advise 8 Performing Arts majors each semester, from freshman to seniors, including transfers. I keep in touch with some alumni through social media and follow their journey after graduation.

                        -designed a High School for this concept. Designed and created media for projections used within the school to help tell the story.

                        -designed scenery on zero budget, using existing materials and supplies.

 -co-production with Create Theater, a workshopped musical, set to present in NYC in May 2023

- researching methods to transform a painting from one image to another for our production of Cabaret. We are using stylized, painted portraits that transform into photos of holocaust victims to bring attention to them pivotal moment in history, which this musical is set, 1930’s Berlin.
